Start with requirements
The right virtualization platform depends on workload requirements, operational skills, backup strategy, hardware compatibility and budget. Platform selection should follow those constraints rather than a preference for a particular product.
Inventory the workloads first: operating systems, storage needs, networking, recovery objectives and expected growth.
Compare the operating model
Consider how the team will patch hosts, manage virtual machines, monitor capacity, protect workloads and recover from failure. The day-two operating model often matters more than the feature checklist.
Proxmox can be attractive where an open platform and flexible virtualization stack fit the environment. VMware can be appropriate where its ecosystem, existing skills and enterprise requirements align with the business.
Make the decision reversible where possible
Use documented standards, portable backups and clear workload boundaries. This reduces platform lock-in and makes future infrastructure changes less disruptive.
